Laughter is the best medicine
In the demanding world of healthcare, it’s easy to focus on the serious. But sometimes, a good laugh is exactly what the doctor ordered. Join us as we explore the lighter side of nursing, where humor helps us survive, connect, and even heal.

Finding joy in unexpected moments
Life isn't always about dying; there's humor involved, too, especially when it concerns our colleagues, our patients, and their families. You have to have humor to survive life! Sometimes, as healthcare professionals, we need to laugh at ourselves, too. It’s in these moments that we find resilience and shared humanity.

A memorable splash of humor
I recall assisting an orthopedic physician in casting an older individual’s leg at the bedside. I had a sixth sense this wouldn't go well. I gathered the supplies, and we began. Casting requires water, so I filled the bedside sink. By the time we finished, the physician, myself, and the patient were soaked! I had to clean up the patient, and the physician and I both needed fresh scrubs. We laughed throughout the ordeal, and the patient even got the giggles, which shifted her focus from the pain. This was one of those moments you live to tell about years later and still laugh.

The powerful role of laughter
The most important thing to understand about using humor in a healthcare setting is that it releases tension and fear. Laughter can be a powerful tool, providing comfort and distraction when it's needed most. It provides connection and highlights the human aspect of healthcare, making challenging times a little lighter for everyone involved.
